(Re)Forming Your Stances

Most people belong to a political party. Unfortunately, many people use this party affiliation as an excuse to not actually get to know political candidates, and instead to practice “straight-ticket” voting, just voting for every candidate that matches a political party. While it is certainly normal for you to agree with many of the people that run under the party you are affiliated with, you should still take the time to find information about the candidates and their stances. In doing so, you might even get more information about your own stances, or even change some of your own opinions.

Getting to know political candidates is not difficult. Most candidates have several webpages with information about them. One of the simplest ways to find information about a candidate is to go to the website of the party with which they are affiliated. Many party sites offer information about individual candidates, or about the party as a whole. Also, using a search engine, such as Google or Yahoo, can be an easy way to find information about candidates. Also, many candidates also have profiles on social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. Of course, if you get the chance, it can be both exciting and educational to go to a political rally. These can either be run by a political party, a party’s affiliates, or by non-partisan groups.

Becoming involved in politics does not have to mean dedicating all your free time to lobbying and fund raising. Sometimes it just means you form your own opinions on matters and do not let a political title make your decisions for you.

Whenever you hear controversial news regarding a political candidate, don’t immediately take what you hear to be true. Instead, record the news you hear and then double check the information with several other sources. For example, if you read an online article stating a candidate acted immorally at some point in their past, you will want to verify this information by checking official news websites and a few other sources. This practice will help avoid you falling into the hearsay trap and believing rumors that turn out to not be true.

Of course, not all people would act so unethically, but you can never be too cautious. Again, this is a situation where you should verify the information given to you with other sources to ensure accuracy.

Although rumors tend to emerge during campaign season and it’s sometimes difficult to separate fact from fiction, you should commend yourself for attempting to learn more about the candidates running for political office. More citizens should take the time to learn about candidate platforms before heading to the polls.

Future Political Changes

The world of politics is always changing to meet the demands of changing world and citizen views. Additionally, changes in technology also spur political scene changes. Therefore, with the vast changes currently occurring in the world and technology, here are three ways politics could change in the near future.

The Rise of Alternate Views

The first way politics could be changing in the future is a shift away from the mainstream Republican and Democratic parties. While these two parties will likely always remain in the forefront, many citizens may begin seeking other political parties such as the Reform Party. This shift could occur because of increasing instances of corruption in the two main parties as well as failures of officials within those parties to fix certain problems occurring within society.

New Campaigning Technologies

A second shift in future politics may be how campaigning information is disseminated to voters. Older technologies are becoming less and less used, forcing candidates to focus on finding new ways of reaching voters such as via the Internet. Candidates may begin hiring younger staff aides in an effort to reach younger voting populations who are primarily using these new technologies.

Increased Voting

A third shift that will hopefully occur in politics is an increase in voter turnout. As candidates begin using newer methods of reaching voters, they will hopefully be able to connect with more and more citizens to increase voter turnout. Citizens must feel their opinions are valued in the political process to take the time to learn about candidate platforms and also to take the time to vote. Additionally, as more information outlets emerge to fight for the attention of citizens, the future candidate messages must be condensed to grab voter attention and relay the campaign platform in the shortest time period.

Future shifts in politics will inevitably occur. Hopefully these changes will allow voters to more easily research candidate platforms and become involved in the political process.
